In this reading, we will try to determine the relevance of set pieces (hereinafter SPs) in current elite football, starting from the very nature of these actions until we emphasise the weight they can have in the game, the result (following its relationship with the goal) and, ultimately, the performance of a team. Having brought to light the need for SPs analysis, we will enter the general parameters of the study of these actions by reviewing the SP analyst functions. All this will undoubtedly contribute to an exhaustive and detailed analysis of these actions, thus facilitating the optimisation of set pieces.

Based on the relevance of set pieces (SPs) in the game, in the result and, ultimately, in the performance of the teams, and with the general SPs analysis parameters already established, we focus on the defensive SPs analysis. To do this, and in order to approach the content in a practical way, we will exemplify the defensive SPs analysis process through a specific action: defensive corners. Therefore, we will delve, through corner kicks, into the defensive organisation possibilities, the functional roles of defensive SPs and, ultimately, into the variables to evaluate in defensive SPs. Besides, a proposal of variables will also be presented with their respective implementation of the analysis of indirect defensive free kicks, specifically, lateral free kicks. Just as module 1 focused on the introduction to SPs analysis and was characterised by being theoretical, the following modules will be presented in a much more practical way, continuously using the example, the proposal and trying to provide the student with resources useful for optimising the analysis of set pieces.

After reviewing the analysis process of defensive set pieces (SPs), introducing a proposal of variables, and exemplifying it through the actions of corner kicks and indirect free kicks, we proceed to analyse the offensive aspect of the SPs. The process will follow a structure similar to the previous module and will have the aim of providing effective resources for the analysis of these actions, all through a practical proposal of analysis variables. In this way, reports of corner kicks, direct and indirect free kicks and penalty kicks will be exemplified and the possibilities offered by the analysis of actions, such as the kick-off and the throw-in, will be deepened.
